  1:代沟

  The generation gap

Every new generation is different from the one that preceded it. Today the difference is very marked indeed.

Old people are always saying that the young are not what they were. The same comment is made from generation to generation and it is always true. It has never been truer than it is today. The young are better educated. They have a lot more money to spend and enjoy more freedom. They grow up quickly and are not so dependent on their parents. They think more of themselves and do not blindly accept the idea of their elders. Events which the older generation remembers vividly are nothing more than past history.

Just look at the teenage girls who scream hysterically over the pop stars and the teenage boys who copy the stars and grow their hair long and are no longer ashamed of wearing "pretty" clothes, are simply breaking through the Chinese traditional reserve and fear of showing their feelings. What is more, nowadays most boys and girls are good companions and some of them even fall in "puppy love." A lot of older people sigh and say, "we did not use to do like this."

Do you think the older people's criticism stems from jealousy just because they could not or did not behave in the same way when they were young?

    2:新时尚

Exploited by New Fashions in Clothing. Do you Agree or Disagree with ThisStatement?

  你是否同意现在衣服样式变化很大这种观点?

Over the years, the great majority of men have successfully resisted all attempts to make them change their style of dress. The same cannot be said of women. Each year a few so called "top designers" in Paris and London lay down the law and women the whole world over rush to obey. This year, they decide in their arbitrary fashion, skirts will be short and waists will be high; zip s are in and buttons are out. Next year the law is reversed and far from taking exception, no one is even mildly surprised.

If women are mercilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame, because they are afraid of the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion. They are annually blackmailed by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be discarded because of old fashion. When you come to think of it, only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe packed full of clothes and announcing that she has nothing to wear.

Changing fashions are nothing more than the deliberate creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to discard clothing in this way, waste hour s of their time altering the dresses they have. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability. They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, providing they look charming and attractive.

When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusion to be drawn is obvious. Do the constantly changing fashion of women's clothes reflect basic qualities offickleness and instability? Do men's unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? This is for you to decide.

      3:彩票游戏

What is your view towards lottery games?

  你对彩票游戏的看法

Nowadays a fashionable street scene is the buying and selling of lot tery tickets. People crowdaround either in front of big buildings or at street corners, purchasing coupons of various kinds, such as those of social welfare, sports industry and football games.

Investigations made among those "lottery citizens" show that they do it for different purposes. Some say that they play the game just for fun, others insist that they want to sponsorathletic development, still some others simply decide to try their luck.

However, I believe the aim behind the game, if fully exposed, is to make easy money, as it issaid the prize winner can get millions of yuan in an instant, which is obviously greattemptation. In my mind, lottery is much the same as gambling in nature and it certainlybrings more negative effects than positive effects, if any.

First, the overwhelming majority, being misled by earning-quick-buck mentality, areimpatient and impulsive to put their time and money into wrong investment.

Secondly, not a few people, being indulged in lottery, lose not only initiative for work but alsointerest in life.

Thirdly, some individuals, having gambled away all their money, may commit crimes.

fourthly, young people, particularly students (even pupils) may step by step become addicted tolottery and finally leave their studies. I think the cliche "reaping what one sows" is stillapplicable today and "sowing" takes time and hard work to have instant reaping is definitelyone's wishful thinking.

Last of all, since gambling and lottery both mean risking money on luck, why the former isforbidden by law and the latt er is so much encouraged?

    4:关于手机

      About the Mobile Phone

Human creativeness is boundless. With the advance of science and technology, a completelynew means of communication — the Mobile Phone — came to the world, which, being notfixed in one place like ordinary phones, greatly facilitates telephone communication.

The mobile phone spreads so rapidly, first from businessmen to office workers, then to townshipenterprise managers, then to journalists and then nowadays to people of all trades andprofessions. At present, it seems that nowhere we do not hear the musical ringing of the mobilephone . People at first buy phones for convenience and later for fashion. To occupy thisincreasingly big market, the manufacturers are worrying their brains into making various typesof phones, large or small, coloured or black and white, multi-functional or with video cameras, to satisfy the needs. New fashions appear almost every day.

However, it is a great pity that the inventors of the mobile phone did not expect the negativeeffects caused by their scientific merits. Because of the abuse of the mobile phone, aircraftmechanism refuses to work properly, libraries are no longer so quiet, restaurants are filled withnoisy phone talk, teaching is incessantly interrupted by the signals...

Here, in the picture, a concert is going on. The pianist is supposed to be playing Beethoven'ssymphony when, all of a sudden, a man with a tie stood up, talking loudly over his mobilephone and telling his friend that he was attending a concert of classical music. The audienceshuddered with panic and the pianist was nearly shocked to death.

It is not infrequent that the above scene happens in public places. True, human beings havethe right to enjoy modern civilization, nevertheless, should they know how to conductthemselves in the modern civilized society?

      5:英国就业率

      seeding employment in u.k.

  英国就业率

As can be seen clearly from the graph, the difference in the numbers of people working in thethree major employment sectors in the u.k. economy in the early 1980s was relatively small, with about 4 million workers in engineering, 5 million in agriculture and 5.5 million in theservice industries.

However, the period 1980-1990 saw significant changes in the relative sizes of these threeemployment sectors. there was a rapid decline in employment in agriculture, with the numberof workers dropping by more than 80%. On the other, employment oppor tunities in the serviceindustries increased sharply, especially after 1986, whereas the engineering sectorexperienced a gradual but constant decline.

Trends in the above graph clearly indicate that the service industries will continue to employthe largest number of people at least for the next few years, while the engineering sector willneed somewhat fewer workers in the next decade. On the whole, the total number ofemployment offered in these three sectors was much smaller than ten years before and theredoesn't seem to be any likelihood for improvement in the near future. So, students who aregoing to graduate soon may need to prepare to seek employment elsewhere.

       6:青少年犯罪

      About Juvenile Delinquency

  关于青少年犯罪

One of the much-talked-about present-day social problems is juvenile delinquency, and its rateof frequency is seemingly on the rise.

It is reported in newspapers that the delinquents range in age from 12 to 18. Only a smallportion have committed serious crimes like kidnapping and murdering. Those cases arehandled through the court system. Most of the delinquencies fall into four categories: brawling, including gang fighting with deadly weapons; theft, mostly petty, sexually promiscuousbehaviour and addiction to drugs. The delinquents are generally placed under temporarysupervision by neighbourhood committees, work units or reform schools.

The causes of juvenile delinquency are varied. Through media we often come across thefollowing cases:

Ill-treatment to teenagers by their step-fathers or stepmothers often lead to family tragedies. School pupil delinquents, being not properly cared for, have chronic behaviour problems. Theirparents are too busy either with business or with gambling. Still, there are cases resulted fromparents' or grandparents' indulgence to their darlings. Petty theft once or twice is notpunished but encouraged. Gradually these petty thieves grow addicted to stealing . Adolescentstried drugs mostly out of curiosity before they finally became habitual drug-takers.

Not a few examples can be found around us in our daily life. Limited by time and space, I haveto skip them over. However, juvenile delinquency, being a serious social problem concerningthe young generation, certainly deserves special attention. I think of all the things we can do, the most fundamental one is deepening and strengthening education so as to ultimately savethe young.

      7:不随地吐痰

      No Spitting!

  不随地吐痰

With SARS gradually passing its peak, more and more people take off their gauze masks. Theyfeel released and have more freedom to breathe in fresh air. However, a certain number ofpeople have restored their bad habit and start to spit everywhere. Now and then, whether inthe street, or on the bus, or in city gardens, we will see some people, the fine ladies andgentlemen, spitting without feeling a bit ashamed as shown in the picture. When shown the "nospitting!" sign, they just turn a blind eye to it. Still worse, people around have to be on guardagainst the sudden at tack of "spits hot" from the spitters.

Spitting is a terrible habit. For one thing, it is entirely uncivilized. The world has entered the 21st century and human civilization has reached a more advanced stage. Why can't thosepeople remove this ugly habit? Is it because they think the earth is a gigantic spit toon? Foranother thing, spitting does great harm to public health. According to chemical laboratory test, one sputum contains thousands upon thousands of germs and SARS viruses if the spitter is aSARS sufferer. As was reported, the Beijing municipal government once mobilized an army of athousand sanitation workers to clean out the mess in Tian An Men Square.

For people to get rid of this uncivilized behaviour, we suggest local authorities strengtheneducation by publicizing the harmfulness of spitting, and at the same time, enforce the law ofpunishment.

Finally, we, citizens of the earth, must be self-disciplined, love our mother earth and don'tdirty her.

      8:金钱有多重要

      How Important Is Money?

No one would argue, I think, that money is unimportant. There are certain things that humanbeings need — food, shelter, medical care and these things cost money. But if one has enoughmoney to live on, to pay for the basic essentials of life, is it important to have a lot more moneythan that? Will your life improve in proportion to the amount of money that you have?

Well, there is no denying that money can buy a lot. Maybe you do not need much money to payfor a simple shelter, but how about if you want a nice big apartment in a nice neighbourhood, or if you want to buy a house? In fact, people do get on each other's nerves if they are crowdedtogether in a small kitchen, if a married couple cannot but share a room with their parents, ifchildren are not allowed to have a little privacy of their own.

Moreover, it is nice to get a little pleasure out of life, a little fun from time to time. Unfortunately, many of the fun things that you can do today cost money. In modern cities, forexample, on any night, outstanding performers appear in night clubs and on concert stages. Furthermore, you can dine on foods from every corner of the world in the restaurants. So howcan it be that many people in modern cities do not have fun? Simple, they do not have themoney to take advantage of all these attractions.

So, is money the road to happiness? Not really. Large numbers of people work every day, workovertime, work weekends, and make a lot of money. Are they happy? No. They have no time toform or maintain friendship, no time to enjoy themselves.

Surely everyone has thought at times, "If only I had a lot of money, I would be the happiestperson in the world." But it is important to remember that money is only a means to an end, not the end itself.

      9:小企业的劣势

      The Decline of Small Businesses

  小企业的劣势

During the recent years, countless small busines ses have closed their doors and gonebankrupt. The corne r grocer's , the small dress shop, the beauty salon, all are victims ofmarket competition. Most of them are replaced by other small businesses that temporarilyfill the needs of the neighbourhood but frequently end up, sharing the same fate ofdissolution. More often, the market served by small businesses is taken over by large storesand shops. Businesses like the corner groceries and the dress shops have gone to bigdepartment stores and supermarkets, which not only keep adequate store and variety, butalso provide better environment and service.

Appar ently, it is increasingly difficult for small businesses to succeed in the present complexeconomic structure based, as it is, on small profit margins and tremendou s sales volume. Lackof enough fund and poor management may be the chief cause of this tragedy. In addition, thequality of their commodities often causes suspicion of the customers as many smallbusinesses are found to sell fake products for more profit, thus earning themselves an evilreputation. As to shopping environment and convenient service, they are unmentionable. All of the above speed up their bankruptcy.

Today, with the establishment of more and more groups and big corporations, how smallbusinesses can survive in the tide of the market competitive economy has become a hotsocial issue.

    10:大城市or乡村

living in a large modern city or in the country?

  喜欢居住在大城市, 或喜欢居住在乡村

"avoid the rush-hours" must be the slogan of large cities the world over. whe rever you go, especially at week-ends or on holidays, you'll find that the tr ains a re packed, streets crowded, buses queued, restaurant tables shared. moreover, the smallest unforeseen event like a power-cut, an exceptionally heavy snowfall or rainfall can bring about conditions of utterinconvenience and chaos.

city-dwellers are obliged by their environment to adopt a wholly unnatural way of life. theylose touch with nature and all the simple, good things of life like sunshine and f resh air atapremium . tall buildings block out the sun. traffic fumes pollute the atmosphere. the flow oftraffic goes on unceasingly and the noise never stops.

the funny thing about it all in a large modern city is that you pay dearly for the "privilege" ofliving. the demand for accommodation is so great that it is of ten impossible for ordinarypeople to buy a house/flat of their own. furthermore, the cost of living is very high. just abouteve rything you buy is likely to be more expensive than it would be in the country.

in addition, city-dwellers live under constant threat. the crime rate in most cities is very high. houses are often burgled. cities breed crime and violence and are full of places you would beafr aid to visit at night. if you think about it, they are not really fit to live in at all. can anyonereally doubt that the country is what man was born for and where he truly belongs?

    11:独生子女的利弊

Advantage and Disadvantages of Being an Only Child

  独生子女的利弊

My father used to talk to me about his five siblings. He used to say that I was unfortunate thatI had none. And I used to envy him and wonder how nice it would be to have a houseful ofbrothers and sisters. I also used to wonder what would happen to me if I were to lose myparents.

Frankly speaking, I do not have to share anything with anybody. I own all my parents' love. Ican ask for anything I want. I always wear new clothes and eat the best food. Since my parentsspend all their money on me, I can study at the best university of the country.

Lucky as I am, I now and then feel very lonely and I have nobody to complain about myloneliness. How I long for a quarrel with my brothers and sisters! Of course I have classmatesand friends, but they are different. Sometimes I feel so pessimistic that after my parents leavethe world, I will have no blood relatives left to share with me the fond memories of my parents. Furthermore, I am likely to become selfish while I realize the world is for sharing.

So, I am happy but lonely; I am fortunate but piteous; I am loved but spoiled; I am well-bredbut selfish, because I am the only child of the family.

    12:助学贷款的优势

Advantages of Getting a Loan from the Bank for My Studies

  助学贷款的优势

I am a college student from a farmer's family in a mountaineous area. A year ago, I wasadmitted to a famous university. Before entering the university, I was told that the necessaryexpenses during my four years'study would cost nearly fifty thousand yuan. My parents hadcollected all the money there was to collect, including the money bor rowed from theirrelatives, but it was hardly enough to meet the needs. Then, good news came that I couldresort to the bank for a loan. I thought it was a good idea and so I did it.

My decision was based on the following con sider ations: First, with the loan I can pay thetuition and support my life on the campus.

Secondly, I don't have to depend on my parents who are always worrying about the enormousfamily expenditure.

Thirdly, I will always have the pressure upon me which forces me to study the hard way.

Fourthly, I have to live a very simple life and save every coin possible. To sooner liquidate thedebt, I sometimes work as a home tutor, sometimes a door-to-door salesman, sometimes arestaur ant waiter.

Fifthly, while doing part-time jobs, I have accumulated a lot of social experience, bittersometimes, sweet occasionally, but happy all the time.

I think the above are the advantages the loan from the bank has brought to me. They arebeneficial not only to my studies at the university but also to my future career, because Ifirmly believe in the saying "Harsh life produces a diligent and intelligent man."

    13:快餐在中国的发展

The Growth of Fast Food in China

  快餐在中国快速发展

In present-day China, we can find two types of fast food: western and Chinese. However, notuntil the recent decade has western fast food become popular in China. Before the firsthamburger walked its way into the Chinese food market, we had little idea about such terms ashot dog, pizza, potato chips, let alone Kentucky and McDonald's. It is the reform and opening-up policy that has brought about the interflow of the food culture between China and thewestern countries.

Fast food, both Chinese and western, has several advantages. In the first place, fast food, as ischaracterized by its name, is fast. The food is always ready and fresh, waiting for its customers. This saves people's precious time, and consequently goes well with the tempo of life inmodern society.

Secondly, it is very convenient. As we know, fast food restaurants are much the same ascafeterias. Customers may feel free to help themselves to any variety provided and eat to theirhearts'content.

Thirdly, fast food restaurants are environmentally comfortable. Clean dishes, shiny tables, decent service and light music all stimulate people's appetite to eat more.

The above-mentioned advantages make fast food become rooted in almost all parts of thecountry and enjoy popularity among people. That's also why nowadays Singapore fast food, Turkish fast food and Indian-Pakistani fast food have found their homes in China.

As every coin has two sides, fast food also has its disadvantages such as lack of nutrition, dulltaste. Nevertheless, these are minor points compared with its advantages. Since most peopleagree with fast food, it t ends to grow more rapidly.
